Preparations are underway for the Supreme Court of India to mark the Diamond Jubilee of its establishment on January 28, in a celebration poised to commemorate this significant milestone. On January 28, 1950, the inauguration of the Supreme Court of India took place within the Parliament  Building, given the absence of a dedicated Supreme Court building at that time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to join the festivities at the Auditorium of the Additional Building Complex on January 28, where Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will also be present to partake in the event. The Supreme Court of India was inaugurated in the Parliament building, as no Supreme Court building existed then, on January 28, 1950.

The original Constitution of 1950 had a Chief Justice of India and seven puisne judges and had left it to Parliament to increase the number. Subsequently, the Parliament has increased the number of judges six times since 1950 to the current strength of 34 in 2019.

In 2023, the Supreme Court saw several technological changes, ranging from litigant-friendly facilities to the Hybrid hearing system being one of the key achievements for listing of cases. Even mentioning of cases has been streamlined, along with smart and paperless courts.

The Supreme Court’s use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for transcription was recognized in UNESCO’s “Global Toolkit on Al and the Rule of Law for the Judiciary”.
