Veteran actor Junior Mehmood died in the wee hours of Friday, December 8. The 67-year-old actor, best known for his role in films like Caravan, was battling with cancer. It is reported that his condition worsened on Thursday night. He was rushed to the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai’s Parel area after his condition deteriorated. He was put on oxygen support but he couldn’t survive. The news of his death comes just days after Johnny Lever had revealed Jr Mehmood was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
His friend Salam Kazi confirmed the news of his death to ETimes. He also revealed that the funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at the Juhu Muslim Cemetery. Junior Mehmood will be buried in the same cemetery as his mother. His family also issued a statement about his death. “Junior Mehmood passed away at 2:15 am at his residence. He was suffering from stomach cancer. May his eternal soul rest in peace,” they said in a statement to Indian Express.
Earlier this month, Salam told ANI, “He was ill for 2 months and initially we thought that he might have some minor problem but after that suddenly his weight started decreasing. And when the medical reports came, it said there was cancer in the liver and lungs and a tumour in the intestine and he has also developed jaundice. So the treatment going on, but the doctors said it’s a stage four cancer.”
Several Bollywood stars had visited Jr Mehmood earlier this month after learning about his battle with cancer. The most recent star to have visited him was Jeetender. Speaking with Hindustan Times, the actor said, “I am here by his bedside, but he is unable to recognise me. He is in so much pain, he is unable to open his eyes. To see him in this state breaks my heart.”
